Workflow/quality query
Posted by Ron Dylewski on December 27, 2006 at 4:59 pmHi –
My facility uses DVCPro25 to shoot on, then, generally, imports and edits using that codec.
Am I correct in assuming that there is no reason to use 1:1 compression as a way maintain higher quality upon output?
Thanks!

In fact, there is a recent thread addressing the issue. I’m not an engineer so take my words with a grain of salt. I generally work 1:1 at the office since I’ve an Adrenaline there. Following comments pertain to my Xpress Pro setup at home
I import DV25 at DV25 res, but I mixdown and do titles at 1:1 to maintain quality of graphics and composites. Most of my final output is DVD so that’s not a problem. However, not having a Mojo, I can’t see 1:1 playback in realtime on my timeline. If you have the opportunity, the best thing to do is try a few tests to see if you can tell a visual difference in importing DV25 at 1:1. AFAIK, DV is a lossy codec. It can be “decompressed” back into 4:2:2 color space via component import, (which may help color correction), but you can’t replace what you never had to start with. Transposing also creates huge uncompressed files. That’s pretty much my take on it. I’m sure you’ll here some varying opinions though ^_^

I appreciate the flame warning! Though, considering how cold it is where I live, a little fanny warming won’t be the worst thing.
I am using both a DNA and a Mojo, and I think I’ll stick with my workflow of importing at 1:1 and working in that space…until I hear otherwise…and have the disk space.
Thanks again.
