The camera operator on this project i’m working on decided to record onto Mini-DV in 16:9 mode (cough cough). It’s a corporate video with lots of simple effects (e.g. gradual desaturation) to some more full-on After Effects (e.g. keying, motion backgrounds). Since the source footage is in 16:9 (the image is viewed as 4:3, but needs to be shrinked vertically to look ‘normal’), I’m getting a headache from trying to think of a workflow taking that into consideration. Anyone wanna help out?

If you’re using Avid Xpress Pro or above, check out the Reformat section in the Effect Palette. Otherwise you’ll have to bring everything into AE and create a 720×480 widescreen (1.2 PAR) composition the length of your footage and then nest that in a 720×480 comp with a 0.9 PAR. Once nested you could add your effects.

I’m not using Pro, just basic Avid Xpress. Do you know the exact number/percentage by which 16:9 is shrunk by? Does anybody?
