  • Workflow question: On-set shot logs to FCP project bins

    Hello,

    I’m shortly taking delivery of two JVC HM100s for producing a studio-based educational series.

    Since the HM100’s produce native QT files I’ll be able to bypass Log & Capture and drop my files straight into a bin.

    My concern is with how can I get my on-set shot log info married to the files in the FCP bins.

    I can have access to FCP while on set.

    I’ve been thinking of a hack that goes like this:

    * I set-up my media folders (camera_A & camera_B) and populate then with a set of sequentially-named QT dummy files (1-sec slugs).

    * I drop the dummy files into their respective bins in my FCP project.

    * During the shoot I edit the appropriate info under Item Properties > Logging for each respective shot (Good, Description, Log note, etc.).

    * Post-shoot, I batch-rename the camera files to match the dummy files and move them into place of the dummy files.

    * I relink the media (actually, just happens with the same names.)

    I’ve tested it a few times and it seems to do what I want:
    The log info that is FCP-centric stays in the project bin and the technical attributes of the files TC, duration, etc. seem to update properly.

    So, does this seem like a reasonable workflow for my circumstances or am I way out in left field? I’m not looking to reinvent the wheel here.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    If not the JVC cameras, could anyone recommend another solid state recording workflow that might apply?

    I’ve looked at P2 and XDCAM workflows but there are usually format-specific utilities to use.
