    Hello,

Quick workflow question here – I’ve just received a batch of .r3d files from a DOP. Hes rendered out some 1080p ProRes for me to composit from, however this project is going for an online later on where I imagine the grader will want to work from the 4k raw. I’m wondering if I can get AE to link the 1080ProRes to the .R3D without having to re-render? Concerned that it won’t & therefore wont be able to transfer my work on the ProRes to the R3D later on.

    Hope that makes sense….many thanks
    Chris

The biggest problem right off the bat is that you will want to work at the same size the colorist is working. VFX work is not an “offline” process in the same way that editing is, and many effects and masks are not easily scalable.

Import the source R3D files and then set the ProRes files as proxies. This will work best if the files are the same aspect ratio (both 16:9 for example).

You can then work on the ProRes footage and render using the R3D footage.
