    Hey all,

I’ve got a bit of a quick question for you… I recently shot a video for a band using a HVX100 at 25fps DVCPRO HD 1080p, with the idea in mind to edit at 720p allowing for digital zooming/cropping of certain shots…

I’ve captured all of the footage to my Mac (Dual 2.0Ghz G5, 4GB Ram, Final Cut 6.0.3) and have imported it into a new final cut document. I’ve set up a sequence at 720p but whenever I drag my files to the sequence they are always wanting to render (which is no good for precision cutting!)… Is there a way to have the 1080p files on a 720p timeline without creating an offline? (I ask as I want to be able to digitally zoom while I’m assembling the rough cut)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Thanks,
    James

How are you capturing? I/O box (like AJA) or FW?

If you have a box, you could down convert during the input process.

The problem is obvious, your using a different codec to edit, then your footage is, this will more often then not, need rendering.

first suggestion if you don’t have an I/O….
put footage in a new sequence and let it change the settings to match your footage.
This should negate the need to render.
You should still be able to do some “zooming” and still have good quality.
I’ve found that HD will hold up much better for this kind of thing than what I was used to with SD.

If something like this doesn’t work for you, I guess you would have to convert your footage to 720, maybe with compressor.

No. If you absolutely must use this kind of workflow, then you’ll just have to wait for your renders. If you don’t want to wait, then cut in a 1080 timeline, lock your edit, then start playing with your pans & zooms.
