  • Workflow: make subclips while logging media?

Posted by Eric Chard on March 5, 2012 at 6:08 am

    NOOB ALERT:

So, does it make sense to simply create subclips as you log your media, so they have easily understood labels, rather than making copious notes on unsliced, intact raw clips?

Do subclips create a drag on the system, or are they lightweight pointers into the original media?

    Thanks!

“So, does it make sense to simply create subclips as you log your media…”

If it makes sense to you, then do it that way.
I work differently but each to his or her own.

“Do subclips create a drag on the system, or are they lightweight pointers into the original media?”

They are lightweight pointers and won’t drag your system down.
Be advised that, since they are only pointers, you need to keep the original files in your project (i.e. don’t delete them).

You also can’t extend the subclip once it’s set, so maybe just use regions and then start another project and copy/paste from the regions (that’s what I do).

    Thanks for everybody’s help.

I would usually make subclips pretty sloppy intentionally, and the original source clip is still there in the worst case.

Still learning the ropes in VMS, so trying to determine optimum workflow. There’s SO many features it’s hard to know if one is just being ignorant of some fantastic tool that would make things a breeze.

That said, I haven’t found good logging/commenting features that would make organizing and referencing media much faster than handwritten notes. (And logging seems to take the most time, with the least fun.) For instance, AFAICT, labeling/commenting clips requires ‘wayyy too many mouse clicks/mouse movement. But there might be some feature somewhere I’m not aware of yet.

At least I found the “Automatically Open In Trimmer” switch. That alone makes a hell of a difference.
