Just wondering what the best procedure is for Editing a movie in Premiere while also adding various effects/masks/transitions etc. in After Effects. When I want to add an effect to just one or two clips that are in the middle of a bunch of edited clips in Premiere, it causes me some problems with timing and also it is hard to preview the audio with my whole movie. As well, I seem to have to render everything in After Effects before bringing it back into Premiere (is this correct?). I’m probably doing everything wrong, or harder than it has to be. If anyone can hip me up to the best workflow, that would be awesome!

    Thanks very much!

Copy the clips from the Premiere Pro timeline to the After Effects timeline. Make your changes and save the comp.

Then, if you have the Production Studio with PPro 2 and AE7 you just dynamically link the AE comp to the PPro project and replace the original clips on the timeline. Otherwise you must render them out in After Effects. Use the DV AVI codec so you don’t have to render them again inside PPro.

    Hi Steve….

If you are using the production studio….

    I suggest the following:

    1) Select yhour clips in the Premiere Timeline
    2) Cut your clips off the Original Timeline
    3) Make a new timeline (like a fx nest for example)
    4) Paste your clips to the new timeline
    5) Copy Clips off the new timline
    5) Open After Effects
    4) Create a new Comp that is the resolution of your Premiere Pro timeline
    5) Open the Comp
    6) Paste
    7) now your clips should have come across trimmed and timed out the same as they were in the Premiere timeline
    8) Create your effect in AE
    9) Save your AE Project
    10) Go back to Premiere
    11) Import the AE project as a Dynamic Link and choose your appropriate Comp.
    12) Use this like any other clip and edit it to the top track of your timeline with just the clips for the effect. (the fx nest seq created in step 3)
    13) Render this timeline
    14) Use this timeline as the new clip on your main timline.
    15) If you have to edit the effect double click the clip on the main timeline. This opens the effect sequence.
    16) right click on the AE comp clip on the Premiere Pro TL and choose edit original. This will take you back to AE right to your project.
    17) make changes to your comp and save.
    18) Changes are automatically updated in Premiere and will need to be rerendered there.

    Does this help?

Thanks so much guys! I forgot to mention the versions I am using and I had meant to say that I did not have the dynamic link available, sorry about that. That’s ok though, you have both given me the insight and tips I needed. I will just have to render the clips out in After Effects and that’s all there is to it. When bringing them back into Premiere I’ll have to pay close attention to where I’m placing the clips back “in”. With several video and audio tracks it sometimes gets a little hectic as you both well know, and I just wanted to make sure I was not doing things the hard way. Again thanks very much and have a great day!!!
