I know this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I’ve researched until I got a headache.

I am trying to build a digital out, but for now, what I have is what I am going to use.

I am running a BetaCam SX. Composite out, XLR > unbalanced audio

Capture card is a SinoVideo PCI 2309 Proteus (7134 WDM)

The card gives me the following options:

    YUY2
    UYVY
    RGB 555 (16 bit)
    RGB 24
    RGB 32
    YVU9
    I420

    Video Decoder
    NTSC_M
    NTSC_M_J
    NTSC_433

Which will give me the best footage to work with? I don’t know what the output will be, and the computer I’m using is ancient.

    Thanks!

    Shawn

It may well depend on what NLE you’re going to use.
Wasn’t that a TV capture card?

You can buy a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card with analog breakout cables really cheap.
You can buy a Blackmagic Studio card with SDI in. They’re not that expensive.

Shawn, on the scale of 1-10 where I know what I’m talking about, I’d rate this a 5. I’ve never seen this equipment before and google searching is getting me anywhere.

I’d pick: YUY2 as thats likely YUV colorspace with 2 samples for the Chroma (422). None of the rest of them would be a good match for betacam tapes.

I think the decoder is to decode analog television streams.

Jeff – That (decoder) makes perfect sense now. Useless..lol

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll test that shortly.

And, yeah, it’s a crap card. It is a P34, but it says “Easy Your Life” on the top. Nothing else… LOL

Craig – Thank you for the suggestions. I don’t own a desktop, and what my intent is portable ingest for spot news so I can upload to Ustream. Plus, I want to hold off purchasing until I can see if I can get the digital component connector figured out.

    Thanks again!

[Shawn Hughes] “my intent is portable ingest for spot news so I can upload to Ustream.”

Ustream? You want to live stream news?
I’d recommend either a MacBookPro or an Asus laptop with Thunderbolt. Get a Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder (HDMI and HD-SDI) Or UlstraStudio Express (adds analog breakout). You’ll be able to record and stream live. Just add streaming software.
