Firewire is fine. You need to use the Internal capture in Vegas 6. There are also Third Party capture apps such as Cineform’s.

Once you have captured, unless you have a breakneck speed comnputer, you will need to use either an Intermediate or Proxy avi to edit proficiently.

Intermediate (there are templates included in Vegas 6) takes up 3 times the space of the m2t file, but are full HD res avis which can be used instead of the original m2t for output.

Proxy, which I use, is a Widescreen DV avi used for smooth editing, then when you’re finished this is replaced by the original m2ts for output. The easiest way to do this is with Gearshift from VASST, a scripting plug-in which changes timeline files from Proxy to Original at the click of a button.

    Peter,

Do you capture the the dv widescreen .avi proxies in vegas
and then recapture the m2t files?

What is the workflow for proxies on vegas with gearshift?

First I use Vegas to capture HDV m2t from the camera. Vegas internal capture does not currently have scene detection, which is fine for me as I generally capture whole tapes as one clip. The separate Cineform software does have this function.

Anyway, whether you’ve captured as one clip or several, Gearshift will then create a proxy DV avi for each m2t clip. These sit in the same folder as the original files. I then use these proxy files to do the editing, and this is now a very smooth process since even on my old laptop I can have several video tracks at full frame rate. At any stage, and particularly at output or render time, I use the “Shift Gears” button in Gearshift and this will replace the proxy files with the original HVD files. All effects, filters etc applied to the proxy files are now applied to the HDV material.

Sometimes during editing I may need a still frame grabbed, so I shift gears from proxy to HDV, make the still then shift back to proxies to continue editing.

How long does it take gearshift on your laptop to
create the proxy files for say, one hour of footage?

    Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Quite a long time …..

I haven’t timed it lately – I usually set the computer this task overnight. Maybe 3 or 4 hours.

My Vegas6c does not recognize the Sony HC1 in internal capture mode. I can capture from HDV as DV in the regular capture mode, but in internal capture “Device Not Available” appairs even though the “Device” is set to “IEEE 1394/MPG2TSdevice”. Any ideas?
    thanks
