I’m trying to come up with the best workflow using proxy material from a Sony FS5 and editing on Vegas Pro 15.
The Sony FS5 can create low resolution mp4 proxy files as it shoots full resolution HD mxf files. In the XDROOT folder of the SD card you can access the ‘clip’ folder and find the MXF files. Below , in the ‘sub’ folder , you can see the lower resolution mp4 files. So for whatever reason you have to access the 2 separately.
ideally—you create a folder (your source for a vegas project)—copy the mxf files …then the mp4 files. Once you do that they automatically get matched up. So you get something like this: Clip001 (the mxf) and Clip001S03 (the mp4) Once you’ve got that you create your Vegas Project , navigate to that folder ..highlight them all and batch import.
They all appear in the project media… so clip001.mxf clip001S03 clip002.mxf clip002S03.mp4 and so on.
I’ve been dropping the mxf file onto the timeline and setting preview to ‘draft’ or ‘preview’.. which seems to take the lag out of the timeline. So I am assuming even though theres an the ‘mxf’ file is in the timeline Vegas is ‘reading’ the mirror mp4 file with the preview window set to ‘draft’ or ‘preview’ Is that correct? Obviously when it renders its utilizing the full resolution mxf.
Does this sound like the correct workflow for using proxy files from a Sony FS5 in Vegas?
I’m either shooting mpeg2 HD 422/50 or XAVC HD 422/50.

What resolution is the .MXF files? Can you post “media info” (its an app) on the .MFX files? If the files are just mpeg2 422/50, that is what Sony calls XDCAM422. You should be able to edit that format natively in Vegas with no proxy needed.

If your camera is recording in 4K, you might be better off letting Vegas build proxies, as those would be in XDCAM-35 (smaller) and a very easy to edit proxy file. Then when you switch to Preview, Vegas will use the XDCAM-35 files for editing, and full Resolution files in Good or Full. At least that is my understanding, but I do not like the proxy editing in Vegas.

Does Vegas not import your cards with the proxies via the Card Import feature?

Its not clear to me how you are matching up the proxy and full files.

I tend to use 2 folders for proxy editing. One called Masters and another called XDCAM. Then I rename the folder with Vegas closed, and when Vegas restarts, point it at the files I want to work on. Generally just rename folder with a -X . If that makes any sense.
