  • Workflow for generating selects/retransfer tape?

Posted by Adam Berk on October 12, 2010 at 2:37 am

I’m curious if anyone has figured out the workflow for recording a selects reel to tape.

    Scenario would be…

    1. Editorial delivers EDL
    2. EDL is conformed and graded in resolve.
    3. Selects reel is assembled to tape with heads and tails in order of ascending source timecodes
    4. Finishing artist uses EDL to conform from the new selects/retransfer reel.

Today, I wasn’t able to get the resolve to record in order of ascending timecode, nor was I able to successfully assemble/record the source timecodes to tape. I was using an A500 dbeta FYI.

    Thanks all,
    Adam

    Hi Adam,

This is one of the workflows used quite commonly:

    1. Use the Split and Add option to add the media, and choose the number of handles you want. Please make sure the conform options are setup correctly before this step. (This step is optional, and you can add everything in the media pool if you like)
    2. Create master session (will have everything in media pool)
    3. Load EDL/audio, etc. and grade that
    4. Switch back to master session (your grades are linked back to master session)
    5. Render in Source mode. It will render out with source timecode on the shots so that the clips can be used for conform later.
    6. In the Deck page, right-click and add the rendered folder for Batch Output
    7. Use the Batch Output function with chosen heads and tails, and lay off the clips to the tape. It will lay off the clips in source order.

You mention you had some issues recording to your A500 digi-beta. Please send us the logs at davincihelp (at) blackmagic-design.com. The logs can be captured using /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/CaptureLogs.app.

    Regards,
    Rohit

    Thanks for the pointers Rohit.

I guess what I was doing differently was trying to output with Power Mastering as opposed to rendering files, then outputting those.

Is it possible to output selects from a Source Mode timeline with Power Mastering?

thanks again, everyone at blackmagic has been fantastic with responsiveness and willingness to help!

    Hi Adam,

Yes you should be able to Power Master as well in source mode. If you want handles, you will have to use the “Create Session with Handles” function in the conform page to create the heads and tails.

Please remember to use the Assemble mode as you will be regenerating timecode on tape. Also there is a checkbox to output source timecode instead of record timecode.

If you still have issues, please send details/logs at our support email address, and we can look into it further.

    Regards,
    Rohit

I use the R4 and regularly output to Digi, the power master will output source code but won’t allow you add pre and post black which affects the ingest in the online slightly. Can be gotten around by extending the handles though.
Also in my facility the code only lays out to tape when we force the digi deck into VITC. Auto & LTC won’t bring the code in.

Thanks Rohit. I’ll try to attempt again tomorrow and if I’m still having issues I’ll send the logs.
