WorkFlow F0r DVD Ripping
Greetings Again, Im am having a hell of a time trying to get this workflow for ripping DVDs and then converting them to NTSC for FCP. THe client wants me to Rip his family DVDs he made a few years ago. And for the life of my I cant getting anything to work. Mac the ripper only works if you have MPEG stream clip BUT MPEGStream says I missing QT components BUT I clearly DO have them in my SYStem so now i have a bunch of VOB files. Now handbrake freezes and crashes if I try to scan the dvd and rip it directly. SO i took the VOB files and tried Handbrake to convert them to H.264 but yet again about 95% of the time the file wont play back in QT 7 pro, hell they wont even play back in MPEG Stream clip ONLY the VLC will play back these files i try to convert. Please Im in danger of loosing this client and I cant afford to lose him. Please help.

Will the DVDs play in a regular home DVD player or in the DVD player on your computer?
I can’t count how many DVD-Rs I have received from clients that won’t play because they have been mistreated by the client- i.e. scratches, fingerprints, never kept in a case, etc. -
I use Cinematize to do all my ripping. (Doesn’t work on CSS disc) I had to buy it but it works great, Rip files from the disc as m2v/ac3 or straight into any QT codec I want. I highly recommend it.
But if these are one of those DVD-camcord deals, there is not enough money in the world to get me to work with them.
BUt you might also have something doing on with your system.

I second the motion for Cinematize. I use it quite frequently.

If you have access to a DVCAM deck (or any other kind of deck for that matter) I would recommend just dubbing it to tape straight from a DVD player.
Then digitize as normal.
