  • Workflow confusion – 23.98fps and 29.97fps together

I’ve been given a TV pilot to edit with a deadline approaching quickly. Some errors were made along the way – both while shooting and capturing.
It was all supposed to be at 23.98fps, but one of the cameras was at 29.97 the whole time. That camera shot about 20% of the total footage.
I was told I could just make a 23.98 sequence and the 29.97 footage would adapt to that and end up with a 23.98 look. Is that true? Sounds too easy.
My next issue is that I just noticed that ALL the footage was captured through FCP with the capture settings set to 29.97 the whole time. (Don’t look at me. I didn’t do it.) The 23.98 footage, of course, still looks 24p and plays, without render, in a 29.97 timeline – so that’s not a problem, but it throws a wrench in the works of the earlier plan of putting 29.97 footage into a 23.98 timeline to give it a similar look.
My challenge now is to be able to use both framerates on the same timeline while somehow having the 29.97 footage look like the 23.98 footage.

With 24 hours of footage to be squeezed into a 30 minute show, my deadline is nine days from now, and being severely delayed because a tree fell on my office and totalled my whole edit station I have no time for recapturing (or sleeping). So, sitting on a folding chair, at a laptop on a bingo table I ask you…what would be the most time-efficient way to solve this issue?

    Thanks!

I would leave the sequence at 29.97 and try de-interlace on the footage shot 29.97i to match the 23.98p. There are better deinterlacers than FCP built in ones. I am about to purchase Nattress film effect filters on the strength of raves about de-interlacing.

What do you need to deliver though? a 29.97 master or 23.98?

The final output can be whatever as long as the two frame rates look similar. It’s ultimately headed for DVD.

I have the Nattress filters, I’ll give the de-interlace a shot.

FYI, I don’t know if this will apply or not, but considering your deadline and work environment, it may save you some troubleshooting.

I recently had to mix footage for the first time. I too was on a deadline and made some mistakes. I also didn’t have time to recapture or do much troubleshooting. Most of my footage was 29.97, but some was 24PA. I used a 29.97 timeline and all the 29.97 footage obviosly was not an issue. The 24PA footage had to be rendered in order to see it. It also was out of synch with it’s own audio by 4 frames. I still haven’t taken time to find out why this is or if I just did something wrong, but consistantly, I slipped the video to the left by 4 frames and all was good.

If someone knows why this happened, chime in. I want to know why for future reference and so I can do it right next time.

    Thanks,
    Gary
