  • Workarounds for Text Media Generators in VPro9a?

I am relatively new to Vegas Pro 9a, and am making teaching videos. I have found the Text Media Generators to be extremely useful for putting quotations and text up on the screen, as well as for both English and Spanish subtitles. I am not sure what I would do without them. However, tonight I opened up a saved project, and not only were some of the events on the timeline red (not the first time that has happened), but also a whole track full of generated media had gone blank.

I closed down the project and re-opened it. The ‘red’ events came up fine, but the generated media was all still blank. Thankfully I was able to open up the English Subtitles version and copy that particular track of generated media back into the original version; so He saved me on this one, which was a praise, but I don’t want to lose work if I can avoid it.

I reported the problem to Sony, but they just published version 9.0a, so I imagine it will be a while before they will publish 9.0b (with whatever few new bugs that patch brings). But may I please ask, what seems to be the general pattern with the Generated Media Glitch; and what are my alternatives here?

I don’t really understand DVDA just yet, but I am rendering out the first of my two projects to MPEG-2 at the moment, just in case I cannot open the files later. However, I was planning on making the Spanish subtitles version tomorrow. What should I do? And what is the pattern that the Generated Media Glitch seems to follow? Does it wipe out all versions of a .veg file? Or does it only hit individual files (this is what I am seeing)?

Would it be safe to try saving a few different versions of each project (e.g., Spanish1.veg, Spanish2.veg, etc.), so in case one .veg file gets corrupted, another might still open? Or does the Generated Media Glitch follow a different pattern?

I have Photoshop CS2, but I do not yet know how to use it. I have to get started with the production again tomorrow, and I am not real swift on the technology stuff, so as much as I would like to learn Photoshop, I am not sure that will happen this week.

I could use VP8.0, but I am using AVCHD footage, and larger stills. It would be a blessing to be able to continue to use VP9.0a.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Wow, that totally did not work. I saved multiple copies, and none of the media generators work.

    ouch. I’m crunched.

In case it helps anyone, I think maybe one thing I can do is just not to shut Vegas down.

When I finish with the basic project, and have all four renders done (Internet HD, SD, Blu-Ray and DVD), then I can save the project as the next (English Subtitles) version. Then I can add my new subtitles, and do all four renders on that as well.

Then I can do the Spanish Subtitles version, and etcetera. That is going to be a serious pain, because I have to wait on my translator, and hopefully I won’t lose all of the additionally generated media.

I can use Photoshop, but I think I would have to use track motion to position the media, which would mean about a bazillion tracks. I would think that would get very unwieldy.

Anyhow, I hope this helps someone.

For what it’s worth, I always do my subtitles in DVD Architect, not in Vegas.

OK, but I have to post my subtitled versions to Vimeo and YouTube, as that is where 90%+ of my hits are.

I am going to try your Photoshop solution next. I think I can set things to standard, so I will only need two or three templates.
