    Greetings,

I know there are always tons of posts asking about which NLE is best. But my question is more of a work flow issue.

I have the opportunity to build 3 complete edit suites in Sept. I am debating on a complete PC and Adobe/Macromedia set up. The work flow seems to be best served transferring project files vs. rendered clips from an NLE to your graphics application to dvd menu and motion menu authoring.

They want to be able to go completely HDV in about 6 months after its built. I am considering Adobe Pro for the NLE and all adobe from there on out. But, most everyone around here is begging me to go AVID/PC or FCP/MAC which my question is, can those possibly have a better quality work flow efficiency compared to all Adobe products?

lots to chew on, but thanks for any reply’s.

If it is just you, then stick with Premiere Pro, it works great. If you need to share with Avid users and/or FCP users, then you might want to take that into account.

Well, there is going to be 3 edit bays but I will be the lead editor and then there will be two other smaller suites for help on larger projects. I am the one in charge of hiring other editors or freelance editors.

I had a idea of three edit bays all outfitted with PC’s and all adobe. On a huge XRAID server for storage and transfer of media in between the edit bays.

Trying to get a better workflow for all bays. But the higher ups want full on Avid Adreline systems with Avid Unity. But you still have to render clips to get to the next step.

Its a bit overwhelming to have a purchase control on 3 suites. lol

    greg,

it sounds to me like the issue ultimately is not going to be
workflow but the ‘higher-ups.’ if they are wanting adrenaline
systems vs ppro, they might well be ready to pounce on any
workflow issues posed by ppro. if you go with their pick,
they won’t be able to say anything. and there are issues
with ppro’s ability to work with other systems.

while i think that ppro is the system that holds the most
promise for the future, it’s a crapshoot as to whether that
will be followed up on by adobe. avid and, to a lesser extent,
fcp are both made with more of an ability to interface their
workflow with other systems in mind. it seems to me that if
there are going to be three suites working together you’re
probably working on a level at which you can expect things
to, at least occassionally, come in from or go out to outside
houses or contractors for some form of collaborative work.
if that ever happens, the current state of adobe software
will open you up to negative scrutiny from above. on the
other hand, if you’re sure everything will always be handled
in house without exception, then i think ppro is probably
    the best choice.

yeah, its definitely going to be a huge facility with 3 suites and complete production facility within the 7500sqft area. Chromamatte set up and with robotic Sony’s for skeleton crew shoots.

The IT guy is coming to go over what we need to facilitate this type of production house, but I was hoping to keep costs down in the post area. Otherwise they are going to purchase in phases, which will be daunting to me trying to piece things together, when we could buy an entire suite on at a time.

Several consulting companies have quoted us at over $800,000. to get started with AVID rooms. Thus it will be brought in through phases. How can you phase 3 suites, you would have to build one entire suite first then phase in second and third ones. I guess though, with the AVID Unity system, all three suites being AVID can work off of the same projects at the same time.

My biggest deal still though is having to render everything before or during an edit to add after effects to it. Know what I mean?

    Thanks for the comments.

I am currently also designing a Premiere Pro workflow for a TV Production house here in Manila. And although they were quite interested in FCP, I’m really pushing for Premiere Pro. One bonus feature which I told them was that I could convert their current PC based desktops, which they only use for writing scripts and office work, as digitizing stations for all their shoots. I can install removable drive casings and they can just plug it in the high end editing bays when it’s their turn to edit. This means they can turn virtually any PC in the office to a digitizing/logging station. In fact, they can even do simple cuts and dissolve edits on their own low end stations. Another would be the after effects interface with PrePro1.5. Being able to cut and paste straight from the PP timeline to the AFX project is a great timesaver. Now compared to the Avid, I personally like PrePro better especially when you deal with a lot of graphics and diff file formats. It’s just more versatile than the OMFI file system of the Avid. But thats just me. 🙂
