I need some ideas here, people. I’ve struggled in the past dealing with bringing different types of documents into Avid, and have recently been experimenting with different ways of doing it. I often get requests from clients to include excel documents and word documents in videos, and instead of saying “no” (which is illegal, aka punishable by law), I make an attempt to bring the document into After effects and scale it, blur it, and animate the crap out of it so when it finally goes into Avid it doesn’t jitter as much. I want to avoid getting a jitter with word documents, excel documents, web pages, etc.

Has anyone found a good way to present these documents in a video? I’m pretty convinced that simply shooting a computer screen is the best way. I’m hoping someone has found a better solution and can help me out. Thanks!

Have you tried using a screen capture utility such as Camtasia? The save out as a movie file supported by Avid for import?

[Nelson] “and instead of saying “no” (which is illegal, aka punishable by law),”

I just want to know what job your in… I’m assuming it’s a joke..

The problem you’ll run into with excel documents is the one pixel gridlines. I think somewhere in excel you can increase the size of the gridlines. Usually, though, I present the data in a different way – using Photoshop. With word documents, I usually scan them in and bring them in as a jpg. Powerpoint will suffer from the same problems if the client uses 1 pixel lines – however, you can save each file as a .png and bring it right into the Avid.

Thanks, everybody, for the help. I’ve experimented with multiple techniques for this. If I bring the file in as is, the lines are very hard, and cause the most jitter. When I print the file and then scan it (as a pdf), it softens the lines a bit and causes it to jitter less. The best bet for me has been to scan the document and focus in on the document with close-ups. Then, my lines are thicker and don’t cause as much jitter. I can also apply a small amount of blur in Photoshop. I haven’t tried the scan converter yet, however. Thanks for the help, all.
