I don’t know what else to do.

    I’ve trashed the prefs.

I’ve opened the project under a new user.

    I’ve simplified my project.

    I’ve rebuilt my media drive.

But Final Cut Pro won’t stop crashing. The project is massive, no doubt (75 minute feature). But even with just a small project up and running, I can’t make more than a few edits without a crash. Which wouldn’t be so damn frustrating if the project didn’t take about ten minutes to open.

Is there something I’m missing here? I’m running another project of similar length without as many problems, though, granted, there are far less SFX and probably way less actual edits. It looks like I’ve maxed out what Final Cut Pro is capable of.

FCP generally scales with your hardware configuration … is it possible that this project is punching above its weight for your Mac set up?

How are you organizing your workflow for this feature in FCP? Are you using a single master project approach or multiple projects … you’ve really not provided any details other than to state you are having trouble.

You note: But even with just a small project up and running, I can’t make more than a few edits without a crash.

When was the last time you did a full clean rebuild of your system? If you system can’t even handle a small project without crashing then this suggests either that you are doing something wrong (which seems unlikely as you are clearly not new to this) or that your OS / FCP install has become corrupted.

    I’m using a Mac Pro, 2 x 3.2 GHz Quad-Core with 8GB of RAM.

I ended up having to break the project apart and basically clear out everything that was in my Browser. I know have a project with three separate sequences and only the bare minimum of video being used.

This is an animated feature and I was trying to keep the animatic sequence nested in a sequence with various revisions of every shot on top of one another going from layout, to blocking, to animation to color. Needless to say, it was getting a little bogged down with all the shots, not to mention a pretty densely packed 24 tracks of audio.

So I cut the movie into three pieces, tossed out the animatic video layer, and it runs much quicker now. Not to mention it takes half the time to open and autosave is barely noticeable now (autosave used to take about 15-20 seconds).

So lesson learned… “keep it simple, stupid”.
