Are you encoding straight from AE? You might think about using the WM Encoder (free) here:

    https://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx

The WM Encoder is so much better than the AE version, I don’t think banding will be a problem if the bit rate is high enough, this from the source below:

Use a bit rate that is large enough to ensure smooth playback. For a 720p file, use bit rates of 3 to 7 megabits per second (Mbps). For a 1080i file, use bit rates of 6 to 9 Mbps. In order to determine the appropriate bit rate, you must balance quality and file size (or bandwidth requirements) to best suit your needs.

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

Unfortunatly my experiences with the stand alone version of the WMV encoder are not very good – the results get worse.

It looks like the contrast is gone and black is not black anymore … the AE internal Encoder Results seem to be better, but not perfect.

I used all settings at max – like in the RAR but still got ‘banding’ (?) problems.

Any further suggestions? Should I post the .WME file?
