November 9, 2005 at 7:24 pmThe easiest way to do this is to have a conversion program like Sorensen Squeeze. That will work just fine. There are also numerous freeware programs that can convert the file for you. The problem is that After Effects does not want to take the file because it is compressed and your quality level is very low with a WMV file.

November 9, 2005 at 9:48 pmI had a problem recently with a badly encoded wmv that I needed to get into FCP for a cutdown (would work the same for AFX):
After trying every combination of converters and encoders available to me, I ended up using the file to burn a VCD (gasp!) on my PC using Nero, and then fed that into the suite.
Doesn’t help if you’ve only got a Mac, but handy to know.

I was recently very impressed by the fact that it was the only software I had that would open or convert an MPEG4 a client sent me…I also have Canopus ProCoder, Sorenson Squeeze, Cleaner, & QuickTime Pro (6.5.2) none of which would open this particular MPEG4.
