I have a pair of monitors with a TRS input, and I need to attach the stereo RCA outputs of a M-Audio Fast Track USB to them. How do I wire a TRS to an RCA?

Hello Adam and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Several ways to skin this cat.

    1. Buy a unbalanced to balanced amp to boost the -10dB RCS outs up to line level, if that’s what the monitors want to see.

    lots of different ones:

    passive:

or just an RCA Male to TRS or TS male plug.

Thanks. I think I’ll go with the second option. I actually have a TRS cable that I can just cut in half then solder on RCA connections. I’d rather that then add adapters. Where does the tip, ring, and sleeve go when wired to the RCA plug?

With the connections lets start with the tip of the RTS must go to the tip ofthe RCA.
The ring of the RTS goes to the outer of the RCA, these are the audio part of the connection.
The shield braid is also connected to the outer of the RCA to provide the shielding.

Occasionally the shield braid is not connected to “float” the earth to stop hum loops on some items but bear in mind it may give you little or no shielding in the cable.

    Adam,

Brian’s correct, but it took me a minute to read his suggestion because he refers to the plug as a RTS. I have only seen it as TRS, Tip?Ring/Sleeve.

Maybe Brian’s from below the equator.
