Wireframe with Anamorphic 16:9
Posted by Andy Crowson on August 11, 2009 at 8:31 pmHey guys,
I’m using widescreen 16:9 footage in FCP6 and was just reading up on the wireframe, the inner box of which I’d been using as a title-safe guide. The image goes beyond the outer box too – does that mean that the part of the image outside the box will not show on a computer screen or wide-screen tv?Cheers, Andy

August 12, 2009 at 1:31 amThe bigger of the two boxes is Action Safe. Keep the subject of your shot in this box to ensure that it shows up on a TV screen.
The smaller of the two boxes is Title Safe. Make sure any text you add to your image stays within this box to ensure that it shows up on the screen and the viewer can see it.

Would that be a wide screen tv? If so, how do I get the entire anamorphic image that I have shot to appear within the action safe box? -

August 12, 2009 at 9:26 pmI’m not sure why you want to do that, but if you do, double-click the clip and then in the motion tab in the Viewer set the Scale less than 100%. The picture will shrink. Realize if you do this, on some monitorsthere will be black around your picture.

August 13, 2009 at 12:49 pmThanks for your comment – I think there are some crossed wires here. All I want to ensure is that my anamporphic 16:9 footage appears in its entirety on a widescreen tv and a wide screen laptop. I’m new to FCP6, so am not sure of the settings, but I don’t understand the idea of the action-safe box if it is true that the image that goes beyond that action-safe box, as my footage does, will appear on a wide screen tv and wide screen laptop without black bars.

August 13, 2009 at 2:38 pmAction and Title Safe were created because in the era of tube TVs, a lot of the TV tube was covered by the TV cabinet. Varying amounts of the screen would be blocked, so someone (no idea who, maybe SMPTE) came up with the idea of a percentage of the screen (to the outside) considered safe (10% for action and 20@ for title). Today’s widescreen TVs appear to have less of the screen covered, but the concept of safe areas remains. And there are still many tube TVs in service.
