Windows Vista on a G5?
Hey guys,
I’m having a hard time finding any information about this, probably because the official launch of Vista just happened today.
I have a Dual 2.7 G5 and would like to install Vista on it with bootcamp or whatever works so that I can continue to use Quickbooks Pro 2007 and a few other PC only apps without the need of my old dreadful pc. Rumor has it that Quickbooks Pro for Mac is a nightmare and is missing features that my accountant and I need to keep everything moving smoothly.
Everything I can find about Boot Camp says it only works on intel based macs, so I’m at a loss as to whether or not this is even possible.
Any ideas?

you will have to have an intel mac to run either parallels or boot camp, as windows needs the intel chipset…
in theory vista will install via bootcamp, but i would imagine that there will be a few hiccups related to drivers and the sorts…but you can guarantee that the web will be full of stories from people who have tried within a few weeks now that vista is out…

Yeah, I figured it was a long shot. I’m holding out for Leapard before we upgrade. I guess I can keep the pc’s running a few more months.

When you do finally upgrade, I suggest using Boot Camp AND Parallels. https://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop
What you do is instal Windows on Boot Camp first (it’s a free download now…it will come with Leopard). That works great but you have to re-start the computer to run Windows when you want it.
Once you get that going, buy Parallels and instal it in OS X. You can now use it to open up your Boot Camp partition while OS X is running. Previously you had to chose between Boot Camp or Parallels…now you can use BOTH on the same copy of Windows. Changes made to Windows in Boot Camp will still be there when you open Windows up in Parallels.
This means you have the convinience of running Windows alongside OS X if you need it, but you can also re-start if you’re running something in Windows that requires the computer’s full power, like any sort of 3D program.
Anyway, I thought I’d mention it since this is a new development and it looks like you’re still learning about this stuff. Most sites about dual-booting still present it as an either/or choice between Parallels and Boot Camp and don’t yet mention that you can use both at the same time.
