Windows Media Encoding
Posted by Steve Mac kenzie on April 25, 2007 at 8:23 pmGreetings,
It looks like I am getting into the Encoding business now to upload shows on the web. Golly gee….Is there a 3rd party encoding suite that gives better performance then the Adobe Media Encoder? Every minute gained is time to get ahead!Thank You for your input!

April 25, 2007 at 10:58 pmA Faster Computer may be the ticket. Maximum PC frequently compares video encoding on different systems. With the Adobe products, the Intel Quad Core is the current king. It’s at least twice as fast as the processor we currently use, the Intel 3.2 Northwood. I don’t recall benchmarks on WMV specifically, but this encoding may/should benefit as well.

April 25, 2007 at 10:59 pmCheck out the COW Compression Techniques forum. They can assist you better. But, to answer your question: Yes, there are better encoding software packages than Premiere Pro. A few of them are:
– Canopus Procoder 2
– Sorenson Squeeze 4.5Aanarav Sareen

April 26, 2007 at 12:46 amAs Aanarav mentioned, there are some good solutions out there for $, but there is also Windows Media Encoder free from Microsoft that is both fast and the quality is as good as any 3rd party as far as the actual encode goes ’cause it’s the same engine. The pre-processing it does have isn’t even too bad for free, but it doesn’t do a lot in that dept. And you can do batches with it or encode live to file or web via input from a capture card even with a pretty low-end machine. It’s not as intuitive or as user-friendly as most of the good software out there (go figure), but if you’re not doing too much in way of volume of clips and if you can either live without or do your pre-processing in your editing app before encoding, it can work well. And you can’t complain about the price!
