    hey all

i’m in the middle of installing an Ethernet SAN based on the Bob Zelin model with a Mac Pro server and all Apple environment, using AFP. we’re thinking about adding a Windows machine as a Blu-Ray authoring station with NetBlender DoStudio. has anyone had any experience adding a Windows machine to an AFP-based SAN? OS X sharing allows you to turn on SMB/Samba sharing on the server. i have the eBook “Take Control of Sharing Files in Snow Leopard” and it says this method should work to add a Windows computer. it looks like the only issue would be file names, as mentioned in the eBook and in another thread in this forum. the eBook also mentions that Vista is better at dealing with out-of-spec file names than XP. but could there be other issues? i’m thinking that the system would only be pulling the video files from the SAN, then doing all the heavy lifting on a local drive instead of the SAN.

    thanks

try it Eric. It will work (marginally). You can “push pull” files using SMB (and all you have to do is turn on SMB in the Options window), and assign a static IP on the PC. It won’t be fast and smooth like the other MAC’s, but it will work.

    Wouldn’t NFS be faster?

Not had any real issues yet with SMB here though to the pc running ultrascope and nuke though.
