Desire to capture HDV with Adobe Premiere CS5 in Windows July 1964 bits, Using the IEEE 1394 connector.

Panel and printer devices Windows detects the camcorder, However, in the capture window Adobe Premiere says "Capture Device Offline".

Often try to connect, With the correct settings, Both the VCR and Premiere, And on rare occasions Premiere fully comprehend and capture device. But turn off and, Lose connection and not retrieved.

Chooses to capture on another partition with XP 32-bit system. Although this is very annoying and I'd like to do that directly in Windows 7, Which is the system where I work.

This seems to happen quite often, especially if one is changing between DV and HDV on an IEEE 1394. Having external USB devices connected also seems to complicate the issue.

I don’t believe this is an Adobe problem. More likely to be Windows support for IEEE1394 and not just Win7 either.

Painful as it might be, before you capture, disconnect your firewire and re-boot the computer. Now connect it back and wait for the device to be recognised.

Load Premiere and capture as normal.

To answer the second issue – In the scratch discs tab of your Project settings you can set the folders in which you want to put your media. I suggest your fastest disc array.

If you are having problems with win7 firewire you may need to change the firewire controller driver in the Device Manager, the one that comes with win7 is a upgraded one and may not work with some chipsets, open up the “IEEE1394 bus host controllers” right click on the listed controller, select “update driver”, select browse my computer, then select “let me pick from a list” you will see a list of drivers, one will have (legacy) along side it, select it.
You didn’t mentione what brand/model of camcorder you have, some have a AUTO setting for selecting the capture, make sure its in either the HDV or DV mode, what ever you are going to capture with, select this with the computer off or the firewire disconnected, hotplugging firewire can blow ports.
