A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.

Are you running windowshade by Unsanity? That’s the only control panel I know of to make windows transparent. Might need to update version or turn it off if you are.

Aside from trashing FCP’s prefs files, such behavior usually points to OS issues or graphics card problems. You need to figure out if it happens in any other applications that pull on the CPU and GPU as hard. Start by repairing permissions (like FCP prefs trashing, can’t hurt) and then trying FCP again. You can also try booting your Macintosh from the installation disk for OS10 and running disk utilities. Can’t hurt. If it persists, you may want to go as far as resetting the page management unit button on the motherboard. Mac OS online help has the PMU instructions, I believe.

Thank you, i deleted shapeshifter which was included with unsanity, and now my fcp runs well! who would have thought!!

That’s the power management button, and if your computer is running, the pmu probably has nothing to do with it. If you mess with the pmu, read everything you can. If you hold this button too long, you can truly screw things up.

I would have never thought of that because I would never install weird apps like that on my editing machine. Also, interesting that you could see "transparent" as a user-caused issue and not a graphics card or OS problem. I was thinking of certain display glitches I think most of us have seen on our Mac monitors at one time or another where a restart cleans it up.
