Windows 7 – Firesale prices
If you’re like me, I am not looking forward to windows 8, so I will take advantage of closeout pricing and “stock up” on Win 7 licenses. Amazon is selling “Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Family Pack (3-User)” for $115.
While it’s an “upgrade”, there is a Microsoft-approved process to do a new install with upgrade discs. First install the upgrade, but do not provide the software key when asked. This installs Win 7 in the demo mode. When finished, go to the DVD and click on “setup.exe” to start the install over. This time, enter the software key.

Windows upgrades usually accept any older Windows install disc, or any Windows partition, as an acceptable thing to upgrade. I didn’t know the run-twice trick.
And sure, I have no use for Windows 8. All three of my PCs were Windows 7 early on, but even at the launch, I paid $50/copy for the upgrade, so this is a great deal. You’d kind of think, with Windows 8 coming, the price of Windows 7 licenses would actually go up 🙂 I bought two full-price (well, “support it yourself” System Builder discs) this summer, one for a PC I built for my son, one for the Windows partition on my daughter’s new MacBook Pro. That was about $200 worth, for two, but of course, neither were upgrades (unless you count the MacOS X -> Windows 7 upgrade….).
