  • Wind Noise with ECM-674 on PMW EX1

I am not a professional but just bought a Sony PMW Ex1. I just tested my new mic for wind noise and it seemed to produce more noise than the built-in mic. I set both channels on internal assuming this was just the built-in mic, then set both to exterior assuming this was for the ECM-674 mic. It created more noise than the built-in mic.
I have never used these before, am I doing something wrong or is there a way to correct this?

Are you using a windscreen on the 674? Even if you are, you will still get wind noise in most situations where wind is present; that’s why you see sound guys and network cameramen using Rycote softies (or equivalent) on their mics. That’ll set you back another $120 but, it’s the only way to stop the wind. The mic built into the camera is not as susceptible to wind as a shotgun is.

I appreciate the information. I was using a windscreen and had the wind noise turned on.

I am checking on how I can buy what you suggested.
