  • Wind Noise – Best way to remove?

Posted by Bob Tanner on August 9, 2009 at 4:26 pm

    Hi,

I know its really hard or almost impossible to remove wind, but I wanted to know which would be the best way to eliminate the most I can. I have tried Soundtrack Pro’s High Pass Filter, but I haven’t really been able to get rid of much of the wind. I have tried Soundsoap 2 trail , but haven’t been able to elimante too much either.

I don’t think the wind is that bad, I just don’t know to use the filter or Soundsoap well? Can someone give me some tips on how to use either one?

    Thanks,
    Zevie

Without actually hearing it, I can’t really say whether it will help, but you might want to give the Noise Removal feature in Soundtrack Pro a go. It’s not a filter. Basically, it “learns” what the noise sounds like, and then removes it. Can’t give you tutorial from memory and I am not in front of a system, but if you search in the Help Menu, there is a pretty good step-by-step explanation.

    Zevie:

Give a try with the Compressor Filter in FCP. It will leave the wind sound and cut out the bursts. It also will help you set the level of the ambient if the wind is loud in your footage.

BTW – I’m not a sound guy, but this works for me.

The article is just a list of the audio filters in FCP, so not really much help. You will probably find the same info in the manual.

If your wind noise is largely low frequency energy you can get rid of some of it using a high pass filter. If the wind buffets the microphone, you can’t really get rid of it as it is a form of distortion of the mic capsule. Denoising is also only partially successful at this. You could try STP’s denoiser.

Use the mud remover audio filter in FCPX. It’s amazing!!! for wind.
