I posted on Adobe’s help forum also about this but wanted a second opinion.

We’re running a Mac Pro 2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 32GB Ram, 10.6.8 and we’re looking to move from Apple’s FCP to Premiere CS5 but noticed in Adobe’s systems requirements on graphic cards the following:
Adobe-certified GPU card for GPU–accelerated performance; visit https://www.adobe.com/go/premiere_systemreqs for the latest list of supported cards

Here’s the list of cards for Mac:
GeForce GTX 285 (Windows and Mac OS)

Quadro FX 4800 (Windows and Mac OS)

Quadro 4000 (Windows and Mac OS)

I don’t see any ATI cards and we have a top of the line ATI Radeon HD 4870 this the work station. (link of card specs below)

    https://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/ati-radeon-hd-4000/hd- 4850/Pages/ati-radeon-hd-4850-specifications.aspx

Does anyone know if the ATI Radeon HD 4870 will work or are there any limitations?

Never mind answering this question. I’ve found out that:
GeForce GTX 285 (Windows and Mac OS) (is no longer available)

Quadro FX 4800 (Windows and Mac OS) (has many issues and way over priced)

Quadro 4000 (Windows and Mac OS) (has many issues including freezing & kernal carshes)

Apparently for right now my choice is to stick with the ATI Radeon HD 4870 that I have now but won’t be able to take advantage of the mercury playback engine.

There just doesn’t seem to be any good choices for that feature in a MAC work station right now.

Mercury Playback Engine is a name for a large number of performance improvements in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and later. Those improvements include the following:

    • 64-bit application
    • multithreaded application
    • processing of some things using CUDA

Everyone who has Premiere Pro CS5 or later has the first two of these. Only the third one depends on having a specific graphics card, which accelerates certain functionality. [Martin Jordan] “Quadro 4000 (Windows and Mac OS) (has many issues including freezing & kernal carshes)”

Q4K Mac issues have been largely fixed with the latest driver from what I hear.

A couple of weeks ago I bought anew GTX 285 Mac card of ebay for about $380. Great card and works in Bootcamp Win7 64 too. And from what I’ve read it is comparable to some of the Quadro cards in performance but a lot cheaper. And Cuda is the way to go for PPro. I’ll be selling my ATI 5870.
