  • Will This Computer Handle HD?

    Hello,

I am currently running Vegas 6 on the following machine:

    HP Media Center Windows XP
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+
    1.00 GB Ram
    250 GB internal hard drive
    250 GB External hard drive

I am considering purchasing a Canon XH A1 to start shooting in HD. However, I need to know if my current computer will handle the added demands. This computer is only about a year old, and I would prefer not to purchase another system right now if this one will do the job. I can upgrade to 3 GB of Ram if need be.

In my experience, it will be slow. It depends on what you are doing. If you are only doing small projects of a few minutes it would work.

I have 3 machines that I have used on a feature length project. One is an older Pentium 4 that took 2 days to do a complicated file. I finally gave up. I had a AMD dual core 3800 X 2 that was slow but adequate. My last machine I bought has 2 cpus on the motherboard and both are dual core AMDs.

Your machine should be fine for working with HDV, but you will want to upgrade to Vegas 7 for much immproved HDV handling.

Should be OK if you switch to Vegas 7. It is much faster with HDV than version 6. In fact I have a friend editing HDV with Vegas 7 on a laptop with very respectable framerates.

Does anyone have experience with P2 DVCPRO HD? on vegas? I have a tool converting the HD clips to AVI and QTmovie, but i need a fast computer that can handle real hd with a good workflow, hopefully with a black magic design card. Any specs?

For around $2600 you can build a quad-core Intel system with a BlueRay burner – doesn’t get better than that.
