  • Will SONY PMW-EX3 w/1/2″ Fujinon HD Lens give me DOF. No LETUS

Posted by Harry Rabin on October 24, 2008 at 6:35 am

Trying to avoid the LETUS, REDROCK MICRO etc scene to emulate film & achieve DOF using standard Prime Lenses etc… by switching to the new Sony EX3 and using the Fujinon XS17x5.5BRM-M 1/2″ 17x High Definition Lens. With the 1/2″ CCD’s will I get Depth of Field like the bigger CineAlta HD video cameras? Current setup is a pair of HVX200’s with Letus Ultimate. Too much hardware and clumsiness to use on Steadicam and Jib…

    No.

However, there is a noticable difference coming from 1/3″
and will be closer to the 2/3″ f900, etc. you mentioned

I mixed some shots of Red and EX3 this week and depending
on the shot selection, they blended very well. I think this
is so because of the great dynamic range and sharpness of the
EX3, and there is just enough depth to bring things out of the
background on medium shots that would not with a HVX, H1, etc.

Here is a wide sample of the EX3 (forgive the H.264 and slow link).
    Sample
    – available light only
    – strait off the SxS card to compressor (scaled down to 720p)

    hope that helps

Well that definitely helps. Did you shoot that with EX3 and the Lens it comes with? What am I really getting if I go the EX3 route with the extra Fujinon HD lens that costs over 7500.00 aside from the lens range… Is Letus or the likes the low cost solution or will any 2/3″ shoulder rig give me the DOF we’re looking for to shoot a feature film? You mentioned the RED, I gather that works with its 35mm lens mount.

    Used the stock lens.

No 1/2″ or 2/3″ rig will give you 35mm DoF.
It’s not about the lens. It’s the chip size.

The letus gives you 35mm DoF because it’s projecting
the entire 35mm FoV onto your 1/3″ HVX chip. If you
somehow placed a 35mm lens in front of the HVX chip
by itself, it would magnify it 7x and still have no different
    DoF than your stock lens.

The Red will give you 35mm Dof and something close
to 35mm resolution. It is not, by any stretch of the
imagination, a run-n-gun camera like the HVX or EX3.
    Completely different animal.

Wow…Thanks Will that gives me a much clearer understanding of the nature of the Beast. I guess we will do the best run’n’gun with our Letus ultimate on the hvx200’s for now & maybe get our hands on an EX3 down the line.

    Hi,

sorry for going off topic but may i ask if the sony ex3 and the Fujinon XS17x5.5BRM-M 1/2″ 17x High Definition Lens work well together. Have you ever used it on wildlife?
