Will Resolve 8 debayer by CUDA?
Posted by Mikhail Puzyrev on May 31, 2011 at 10:42 amI’m curious if resolve8 will use cuda for debayer or I have to look for redrocket? 😉

May 31, 2011 at 11:52 amNot as far as I know. But Resolve 8 is in general a performance boost over 7.

May 31, 2011 at 12:04 pmFor all other bayer formats other than Red, we offer a GPU accelerated debayering. ARRI, SI-2K, Phantom, CinemaDNG, etc.

June 1, 2011 at 11:02 amDoes it needs buying kind of license from RED? How did Adobe make their Mercury engine which uses cuda for red debayer?

June 4, 2011 at 4:41 amAdobe doesn’t do GPU Red debayer as well. It’s strictly done in CPU. Mercury engine just speeds up the rest of the render. Nobody is allowed to do R3D GPU debayer. It’s kinda ironic, because, there are no technical reasons for that, as Red Rocket itself is a GPU device. I know of at least one company, that did try a crude GPU debayer of R3D and without any optimizing of the code was able to achieve 18 FPS. Nevertheless, Red owns R3D and they are free to set any policy they wish. And they choose to sell Red Rockets…
On the other hand, ARRI RAW GPU debayer is allowed… -

June 14, 2011 at 7:03 amI don’t think it’s because RED wants to sell more RED Rockets. Contrary to what many people think, the genius in RED paradigm is *not* the hardware (although it is high performance) but rather the REDCode codec. Letting others ‘debayer’ RED footage would mean that they would have to share their most precious trade secret: RED Code.
