  • Will installing Final Cut Pro X affect Final Cut Pro 7?

Posted by Jan Laidlaw on August 31, 2016 at 8:13 pm

Since installing El Capitan, Motion 4 no longer works for me and neither does chromakey in Final Cut Pro 7 (color picker doesn’t work). So I am now considering FCPX, but I still need to access my other projects in FCP7.

Will the install create any problems with FCP7?

    You could use Motion 5.

Or the Apple Best practices for X and FCS3 are here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202240

Thank you. Yes, I only have Motion 4 at the moment.

If I’m understanding the link you provided, it sounds like I would also need a new drive for FCPX since partitioning my original drive is not an option for me? I have other hard disks for my projects but have never installed software on them. Sounds more complicated than I thought, but maybe I am misunderstanding the process.

It’s the most recommended but not necessary.

If you keep reading you’ll see how to keep both. I have fcs3 and X on almost all my machines without separate drives or partitions. It works well enough for me, but I am mostly on X and keep fcs3 around for legacy projects which I then translate and update.

Okay thanks Jeremy, that’s helpful. Might be best I install this when I am between projects.
