  • Will Final Cut 7 Stream Multi-CAM or save on the fly?

Posted by Kyler Boudreau on February 19, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Specs: Mac Pro Quad Xeon/8GB RAM/3 drives with Snow Leopard and Final Cut 7.

Question: I’m getting ready to record a live event – two HDV cameras sending roll in. Need to edit on the fly (camera switch on fly for lay into timeline) to then save each two hours during conference break for website upload. Will Final Cut do this?

I know Final Cut can capture multi-cam to allow me to lay into the timeline and select cameras for a final edit, but I will not have time to do that. I have to control camera cuts from the application and then just hit one “save” button to cough up a quicktime of the two hour feed for FTP upload.

    Hopefully I’m making sense. THANKS.

You need a video switcher. FCP doesn’t do this. It captures one stream only. It is an editor, not a live event switcher. But, if you get a switcher, you can switch the cameras and feed that one final feed into FCP to capture, then “spit out.”

That would be called the Newtek TriCaster. Not Final Cut.

couple of options: boinx tv or wirecast

both will do what you’re asking.

Telestreams Pipeline encoder is the only option that I know of that will let you cut mulitcam live in FCP. But only works with SDI feeds and not HDV capture.

You guys are all awesome. This forum has already been a huge help as I get used to the switch from Windows/Avid to OSX/Final Cut.

    THANKS.
