Yes. I see your logic. I too have come to the same decision. I will look around for a used or refurb and start small, but expand later. I didn’t know a G5 would run FCS2, but this opens up even more options for a half broke company. -

A Macbook Pro has a express slot that you can add a eSATA card to to use eSATA drives with. That will keep your media drives completely separate from your camera.

Why? Have you used it lately?
Considering what you want to do, you really should consider Adobe. The integration between products is rather amazing, and it will truly fly on your Avid setup. Plus you don’t have to buy all new hardware just to solve a software problem.
Download the Adobe demos and try them out. You might be surprised, then switch to a Mac when fund allow you to buy the right gear.
