Will FCP X import from my Scratch Disk ?
I have a job that I would like to do on both App FCP7 & FCP X at the same time for comparison and to get familiar with the New One. I haven’t installed the X yet but I’m thinking in doing it soon.
I have already ingest the material from my HDV Camera to FCP7 using the preset HDV -> Prores 422 and the files are on my Raid Scratch Disk.
The question is: I have to import the files again to work with them in X, right ?
They are already transcoded to Prores 422 in my Media Folder at the Scratch Disk .
Will X copy again the files to another folder ??PS.: Does anybody knows or has a clue if FCP7 or FCP X are going to work faster and better on Lion ?

You should be able to import the files but in your FCPX Import Preferences, Disable Copy files to Final Cut Events folder so it doesn’t duplicate the media. It will just create aliases instead.

So, this “copy thing” in preferences is to keep the originals where they are, another HD, Desktop or wherever, to be there as a backup ?

Final Cut Studio “3” -
Copy will automatically make a copy of your ingested media onto your System drive. IF you already have ProRes versions from FCP 7, checking that off will simply link to your original files instead of making a second copy. Which is more what you’d be used to seeing in FCP 7.

Actually it will copy to the Drive your Event is on. It doesn’t have to be the System Drive at all.

Otherwise X would do what I’ve heard here so many times ….”Do not use the system drive as Scratch Disk …”

It’s interesting that FCP legacy would drop things in the Document folder by default and FCPX’s “advancement” is now it defaults to the Movie folder.
I wonder if it would make more sense if you just got a popup asking where rather than ever defaulting to the system drive. I could see someone getting backed into using the system drive if they have a laptop and “forgot” their external drives but then even that case should be a conscious decision.
