  • Will AVID ever support MXO2, Kona, Blackmagic?

    Hi All

Can anyone shed any light on this – I know the Avid were on a charm offensive at NAB, maybe they let this slip?

The likes of the IO express are of no interest – I want pro audio IO, deck control and genlock. But – will AVID ever allow people to bypass their own Nitris boxes? Doesn’t seem likely to me.

I’d like to look at offering both AVID and FCP on my newer MacPros for hire – but without universal support for my current hardware (MXO2’s and Blackmagic Multibridge) or at least a Kona LH, I’m not on board…

Doesn’t seem to me like the $995 offer is much use without this for me.

To recap, you know Media Composer supports the Matrox MXO 2 Mini, and the AJA IO Express and DS supports the Kona 3.

Digidesign (Avid Audio) has gone to ProTools Native, which uses any audio I/O.

All this has happened in the past year. I don’t think it’s a stretch to see that Avid is opening up to third party hardware.

As they are a public company, Avid’s policy is to not comment on future products. But if this past year has changed the whole way Avid deals with 3rd party hardware, well, that kinda says something about the direction the company is heading, doesn’t it?

Avid marketing is on the record as pointing out that Matrox MXO2 Mini and AJA IoExpress are the first two steps in an ongoing process.

It’s a different issue for Media Composer than for FCP or Premiere Pro, because Avid does not use a hardware abstraction layer. This means that code is written to address specific hardware. As a result, Media Composer has traditionally been a better performer with Avid hardware than FCP has been with AJA, Blackmagic or Matrox products. By performance, I mean things like latency, responsiveness and other benefits, like hardware codecs.

The downside of this approach is that Avid engineering has to do some work to integrate an IoExpress into the system. This engineering work may or may not directly translate when the decision is later made to add support for another card, like Kona, for example.

I recently purchasd a Blackmagic Decklink Studio 2 card to use with FCP, not really thinking about whether or not I’d get support with MC 5.5. Has anyone heard anything new about future support for Blackmagic products with MC 5.5? I would hate to have to go out and replace my decklink card with the Matrox Mini, but would be willing to wait if support wasn’t too far off.
