  • Will Apple drop the X?

Since Apple now dropped Roman numerals on iPhones, will the next release of Final Cut Pro drop the X, too? Right now it’s inconsistent – some places the X is used and in other places it isn’t. The only other app that still uses the X is Logic Pro X. QuickTime Player, Motion, and Compressor don’t show any numeral or version number in the name. After all, by now there are plenty of FCPX users who have never used FCP 1-7.

I personally like the X. Not only does it separate the app in discussions with Legacy users who know both, but it sounds like an “Experimental” or “X factor” kind of designation, which makes its differences from traditional track NLEs continue to play as intentional and innovative. In any case, this will have to be addressed if/when they finally get to v11.

[Douglas K. Dempsey] “but it sounds like an “Experimental” or “X factor” kind of designation”

Except that it never was “X”. It was always “10” as a Roman numeral. Same as the OS and the iPhone.

A version 11 would be like the huge change from 7 to 10, given how Apple confused us all with the version numbering nomenclature change. So the next major version update would be 10.5, then 10.6, and so on. A minor update would be 10.4.7.

one of the greatest scenes ever.

“No, we don’t shoot in 8K, we shoot in 16k” – why – “because 16k is so much better than 8K.
Why don’t you just call 16K, 8K – “well, because 16k is so much better”.

You did not show the second part of that memorable scene – I will translate it for this crowd –
“this is my new Mac Pro. No, you can’t touch it, don’t point at it – don’t even look at it” –
    but it’s not on –
“but if it was on, it would be SO MUCH faster”.

I’ve been calling it FCP 10 for awhile now; everybody knows what I am talking about.

I don’t know anyone that calls it 10. It seems to be universally known as X in my circle.

I thought this thread might be speculating if Apple EOLs X at the 10 (X) year mark.

Or they might have another 10 year plan for improving it at the 10 year mark considering how many people use it… We can call it FCP 11.

And that’s the only thing it should be called, yes. It’s “TEN” not “EX”. The only time I’ve ever said “EX” is when abbreviating, e.g. “FCPX”. Pretty much every (competent) Youtuber for example calls it TEN as well. You’ll also never hear anyone from Apple say EX, obviously. If anything, they’ll correct you if you do. ????

And no, I don’t think it will go away for a very long time. Just as there may never a macOS 11 either.

    But then… who really cares?
