  • Will analog to DVD via ConvertX using USB work?

Posted by Byron Carrier on April 21, 2008 at 7:54 pm

I convert my from Hi8 analog videotape to DVD via a Plextor ConvertX converter using an USB to my computer. I’d like to buy and use the Vegas Movie Studio/DVD Platinum to edit, but I read it needs Firewire and won’t take USB. If I convert in the ConvertX into the computer via the USB and then inport that file into the Vegas editing system, would that work?

    Hi
AFAIK none of the Vegas software will capture from USB.

Now going the way you mentioned is okay depending on what type of file the Plextor ConvertX will create.

Thank you! My Plextor ConvertX captures analog to digital and sends it to the computer via a USB port resulting in a .mpg file. Once my Intervideo WinDVD Creator (current very limited capture and editing program) edits it, it becomes a .wcp file.

For some reason, none of my files was currently available to the WinDVD program. (I had to crash and rebuild my HD recently, and that may be at play. Perhaps I have to re-register with Intervideo; I don’t know.)

I like it that your reply came to my e-mail inbox as I may have had trouble navigating back to the proper place in the very large forum. Again, thanks for your help.

A related issue is whether my current processor will handle the Vegas editing anyway. Vegas calls for 800 MgHz minimum and mine is 650. I don’t mind waiting for rendering and perhaps the speed was necessary for capturing via the firewire. I may need a whole new computer, or can I “get by” with my slower processor and editing pre-captured .mpg files?

Do yourself a favor and get rid of the USB converter and get a firewire converter. You’ll be much better off in the long run. Capturing DV-AVI is much better than capturing MPG.

    Thank you.

Not only am I stumped at the lack of a firewire and the slow processor, now, checking how the Plextor ConvertX works, I find the video image to be way too dark. And not only does the help file not address this, the Corel (bought Plextor) forum is hard to enter and use.

In your estimation, would the Plextor converter with a firewire (I would install a a firewire card in my computer to accept it) be a good choice towards using Vegas, or some other model? (I have lots of analog tapes to be edited. My next camera will have the firewire out.)

Get a converter like the Canopus ADVC series, Pyro ADS, or any of the other ones recommended many times on this forum. They’ll accept input from your VHS/DVD players and output to firewire to the computer.

Thanks and bye. I’m new to forums, so I’ll try to find answers before asking for them. I appreciate your advice.

I wasn’t saying don’t ask questions. I was saying there are other convertors mentioned if you want a larger list to choose from. For example, Rick (one of the forum moderators) uses another model but I forget the name of it. If you do a search, you’ll get a larger list of options than I provided in the previous post.
