  • Will AE play nice with FCP high def??

I started a thread on the Final Cut forum with this question and it was suggested that I try over here.

Can anyone here help me take HD footage from Final Cut Pro into After Effects and then render out new footage from AE that will match the original media when imported back into FCP?

My video was shot as DVCPRO HD 720p 30 fps, and captured in FCP as ProRes 422 (HQ). Anything I export from FCP to AE and then render back to FCP comes back darker than the original clip. My hope is to export something out of AE that will be a match for the original clip in FCP.

I have tested these settings in AE:
    Workingspace: none
    8 bit per channel
Footage also set to none for color space
    Export as animation.
This produced footage darker than the original when imported back into FCP.

I tried the same settings as above, exported as ProRes. Same problem.

    I tried:
    Workingspace: 709, 709 (16-235), SMTP-C
All the same: footage is darker when reimported to FCP.

I tried all the same settings in 16 bit per channel. No joy.

Is it just impossible? I’ve been working in AE for years on standard def material and it’s a major disappointment to have this barrier on my first HD projects.

try an adjustment layer in AE at .82 gamma. if that brings you into the ballpark its just a Gamma 1.8 vs 2.2 thing. also in FCP you can change the gamma on imported (video properties i belive) clips seperatley. I think apple is assuming all rgb to be 1.8.

Ok. I just verified that in FCP you cannot alter the gamma levels in “item properties” for RGB codecs like animation, though if you export a yuv out of AE like prorez you can. it doesnt like you can change the gamma levels but you can.

what is confusing me is that the other day i was getting wacky gamma out of prorez..??

btw mac pro fcp6x with CS3 production prem
