[April Henderson] “I moved the 2d text layer in between my 3d layers and the sun just as a test, but it didn’t create any problem with my sun layer.”

Was your sun layer still below the other 3D layers in the timeline? You’d need to place the layer above a 3D layer it’s supposed to be behind, then place a 2D layer in between them in order to break it.

I was just playing around with some other 3d compositions. Nothing but simple colored layers! Exact same problems! Layers will appear in front of layers depending on order in the timeline. It’s a flawed 3d program.

April: If you follow the link posted by Todd, you’ll find an comprehensive list of procedures that will break 3D intersections.
Note that everyone in this thread said that this is the expected behavior, and it’s perfectly documented in the manual. It’s not a flaw or a bug. Do you know any 3D program with adjustment layers, for example? There are some tools which have 2D compositing logic in their very nature.

I wasn’t referring to my previous composition. I just experimented with a new, large compositions of simply after effects 3d layers (ctrl-shift y) and I noticed the same phenomena, without any 2d layers whatsoever. It’s just the simple fact I’ve known for a long time, the render order dictates often what layers will be visible and not. And certain layer will pop out frequently from various angles.

When I originally asked, the only thing I was told was 3d layers will always appear in their assigned position. But that wasn’t exactly true.

    April:
2D layers are not the only thing that can break the 3D compositing hierarchy.

Ok…I will study this more and come back with more intelligent questions/answers.

If this is not a bug why do i get a different result at different camera distances, with the same layer setup?
