January 26, 2008 at 8:33 pmJeremy, I went down and my local dealer had a Fostex DS8 in stock and sold it to me for $69 … so it may be a little overkill, but it’s actually cheaper than the M-Audio CO2.
As for a mixer, they suggested the Soundcraft EPM8 (https://www.soundcraft.com/product_sheet.asp?product_id=136) … he said it will do everything I need and again, it might be a little overkill for my needs but the quality and expandability of the Soundcraft EPM8 make it a good choice for me.
Any thoughts?

January 27, 2008 at 6:08 amOK, this might be a silly question at this point as what I have seems like it will be fine. However, as I’m thinking about the possibilities of inputting DVD via component with the Kona, is there such a thing as a straight Optical S/DIF to AES/EBU to connector to input the DS8 into the Kona card as well? I’ve come across the Hosa ODL-312 (https://www.hosatech.com/hosa/products/odl-312.html#) which will do this, but I’m concerned that putting another box between the source and the Kona will affect the quality.
Am I just shooting for the moon to believe that there is such a glorious “single cable” solution to get Optical S/DIF to AES/EBU?
Thanks again for all the help in the process Jeremy, I really do appreciate it!!

There’s a few things wrong here. I f you are planning on recording Hollywood movies, this won’t work due to copy protection. If for some reason these aren’t hollywood flicks, I would not capture via component, but rather I would use a program like MPEG Streamclip (it’s free) to transcode the VOB files to whatever format you are working in.
If for some reason you do need to capture optical, your MacPro has an optical in and an optical out port.

January 27, 2008 at 5:14 pmHey Jeremy, it wouldn’t be for copy-protected movies, but rather if clients provided footage on DVD. As for the audio, I was being a bit silly I think trying to get everything through the Kona, but going through the MacPro itself is probably the beast (and easiest) way to go.
Thanks again,

January 27, 2008 at 6:20 pmIf you are capturing video through the KOna and audio through the optical, it will be out of sync. If a client supplies a DVD, your best bet is to use MPEG Streamclip. It’s super easy to use and it’s free, did I mention it’s free?
I should also add that you can capture analog audio via the DVD player so that the audio and video are routed through the Kona. Everything should be in sync by then.

January 27, 2008 at 8:36 pmHmm, MPEG Streamclip looks like a winner … free, I always like free 🙂
