  • Wierd light flickering in footage

I have some footage that was shot on a sony XDCAM EX, it was shot in an open convention hall, with poor lighting, however (Im assuming) a mixture of 5600k and 3200k lighting plus interlacing i think, gave this weird lighting flicker to the footage, here is a short video, its heavlily compressed, in the raw footage it actually seems like the differnt color temperatures are scrolling up the screen really fast, if you know what I mean, like a screwed up old CRT screen.

    Flickering Problem

Anyway, is there anyway I could fix this? some kind of de-interlacing would help? If so what is the best method?

This was shot in china, however the raw footage is in this codec

    XDCAM EX 1080i60 (35 MB/s VBR)

I had asked for 1080p30 but this was through intermediaries and language barriers so I kind of expect 25p anyway, and figured I would have to do some compressor transcoding. If you see some of my other threads I have posted recently I had trouble even opening this footage. My boss told me they had shot this on a Cannon, and I found out from the files that it was XDCAM, and XDCAM Transfer and Browser both did not work, I had to use cinemon.mp4 to open the files, in QuickTime they all have horrible interlacing lines, although in final cut they seem fine, except of course for these shots that were in this lighting against a white background.

China is 50hz mains so the flicker is the wrong frame/shutter for the lights. The camera person should have seen this in their viewfinder and adjusted for a longer shutter to avoid this.

The answer isn’t just deinterlace. I recall previous threads about such lighting flicker recommend fixing in AE.

Here’s some more ideas from a google search – https://toolfarm.com/plugins/index.php/Flicker_Removal

I am trying these filters in both AE and FCP but not having much luck, if it is a shutter problem, why does it not happen for all of the footage? I received about 3 hours of footage, only the footage shot in this particular lighting had this problem.

[Christopher Targia] “why does it not happen for all of the footage?”

I wasn’t on the shoot so my guess is that the camera person may have noticed the horrible flicker in the viewfinder and adjusted the camera shutter.

Depending on the kind of lighting in the area where the shooting took place, the flicker can be better/worse. If the lighting was incandescent (light bulbs) the flicker will be less or not noticeable at all. If the lighting was an arc-type (sodium or mercury) the flicker will be much worse since it will flicker with the frequency of the electrical power in that area. In this case you were shooting at 60 frames/second and the lights were flickering at 50 frames.second.

ok gotcha, 50hz power-source on the lights, with 60fps shutter speeds cause a problem, but now the question is how do I fix it?
