widescreen workflow
I am putting together an educational video and my source material has been given to me as a mixture of 4:3 and letterboxed clips. As historical material, the letterbox style works well so I’d like to convert it all (rather than increase the size of the clips already in letterbox format). I am thinking the easiest way to do this is to finish editing the whole 15-minute program, export it as a QT so it is all one long clip, and then apply the Widescreen filter. To prepare my original program, I’ll have to be careful to keep my critical material, titles, etc. within the letterbox space for each clip. Then the Widescreen matte would apply evenly to all the clips, assuming it is a little smaller than the original ones that started out as letterbox. So my questions are:
–Does this make sense for a workflow or is there a better way?
–Will I be safe if I keep all titles within the title safe area (maybe I’ll have to experiment)?Susan

I’d use the widescreen filter as I edit. Just apply it to copies of the master clips in my browser, and edit from them. Those 4:3 clips may need adjusting up or down for framing purposes.

Even better just put a slug above all your tracks and matte that. Or a black ps file with a letterbox hole in the middle. You can easily turn that track on or off to hide the mask. And it’s very easy to just use wireframe mode to move any clip up or down to fit in the mask the way you like. And you can even have titles in the letterbox area as a graphic design if you like by putting them above the slug.
But don’t output as a qt and bring it back in. You’re just adding a step and losing all your timecode information. If you feel the need to consolidate a sequence into one clip simply nest the sequence so that you can still edit the material within the sequence.
