  • Widescreen changing to 4:3 and I don’t want it to!

I have some widescreen video I shot on a Canon HV20 camcorder. When I import the video, it shows in the import preview screen that it is widescreen. When I view the video just on windows media it shows widescreen, but as soon as I drop it into the timeline it goes to 4:3 even though my project is set at NTSD Widescreen.
I thought about cropping but it seems like I am losing some quality.

I don’t know if it’s an issue because it’s shot in HD and I am using SD? Or if it’s the camera? It’s only these clips from this camera that have the issue every other camera/clips are fine.

I am hoping it is something easy.

[Linda O'Connell] “I am hoping it is something easy.”

Well, it most certainly should be.

OK, to check that Vegas IS behaving itself, with your footage, start a new TEST project and just Import a sample of this footage you’re having issues with. Go to Project Settings and use the Match Project to Media Icon in the very top right corner of the Settings menu. Navigate through to where you have that Media and just select and choose OPEN. This action should NOW adjust the Project to the Media you are using. Now what do you get in this TEST veg?

    Cheers

Did it. Went to 4:3. So what does that mean? Am I crazy?

[Linda O'Connell] “Did it. Went to 4:3. So what does that mean?”

It means something isn’t as it appears to be. When you drop the clip on the timeline, right-click on the Event that’s created and select Properties and then go to the Media tab and see if Vegas is correctly identifying the Video Format properties as 1920×1080 Pixel Aspect Ratio 1.0000. If you could post a screen shot of this dialog that would be very helpful. It might also help to post a screens shot of your video preview window so we can see what you are seeing.

Use the Add Image button to show us screen shots of what you are seeing:

    [Linda O'Connell] ” Am I crazy?”

That’s a more difficult question to answer. I’m a firm believer that you are only as crazy as you feel. Are you feeling particularly crazy lately? 😉

I just reimported it using a different software. For some reason I have always had problems with Vegas and the HV20 camera. Just thought it would be easier to start over and now it works fine. Thanks for everyones time and help.
