widescreen anomoly
Posted by Peter Rooney on August 10, 2008 at 11:21 amI shot some footage using the DV PAL ‘widescreen’ setting in my HVR-V1.
Captured it in Final Cut pro and it produced a QT file which in the apple finder is described as 720X576 ?
Why?
When I open and examine the file in Quicktime properties it is displayed and described as 1024 x 576 which is what I thought it should be in the Sony ‘widescreen’ setting.
So I have to make a custom sequence setting in FCP of 1024×576, square pixels and dump the clip onto the sequence and the clip assumes a 4×3 aspect ratio?
Why?
I have to distort it and render it to get what i thought I had in the first place, 1024×576.
Can anyone explain this?

PAL (4×3 or 16×9) are both 720×576 but they use different kind of pixels.
Is correct that the QT info gives you that size. 1024×576 with Square pixels would look like PAL Anamorphic, but is not Standard PAL. If you get this size in the QT properties, this is just for display purposes.
What is important is that when you import he clips to FC, they show as 720×576 in the Browser. Then you need to check the Anamorphic column.
Drop the clips in a DV PAL Anamorphic sequence and you won’t need to render nothing.

August 10, 2008 at 1:17 pm720×576 is the correct format for DV PAL. All PAL is that size.Widescreen is anamorphically squeezed into that frame and displayed as 1024×576. You capture and edit your material using a DV PAL anamorphic preset into DV PAL anamorphic sequence.
This is all basic video production information and is widely available on the web and explained in some detail in the manual.
All the best,
Tom

Yes I know that Tom
‘Widescreen is anamorphically squeezed into that frame and displayed as 1024×576’
I know that as well
‘ You capture and edit your material using a DV PAL anamorphic preset into DV PAL anamorphic sequence’
Yes I know that’s what should happen, BUTHere’s where it’s puzzling me,I already tried to make a DV Pal Anamorphic sequence in FCP and drop the clip into it but FCP tells ‘Your sequence and external video should be set to the format of the clips you are editing. Change sequence settings to match the clip settings?
So it seems that FCP doesn’t accept that this is ‘anamorphic’. If I accept the FCP recomendation it gives me a 720×576 sequence and the clip is horizontally squashed, if I select ‘correct for aspect ratio’ the clip is squashed even more horizontally.
So I’m guessing that the camera is ACTUALLY shooting 1024×576 and NOT anamorphic

If you look at your video in the browser you will most likely find that the “anamorphic” box is not checked. Check it on any clip (yes you can do it after the fact), then open a new sequence and drop that clip on the timeline and let FCP match the seq. settings the clip. Okay, what happens???

Peter,
In all fairness, my good friend Raphael first mentioned the same thing, but somehow you overlooked it.
Oh, and for the record, next time you should choose the anamorphic easy setup before capturing and it will avoid the issue. However, now at least you know what to look for and you can be a star next time the same thing happens to someone else.

I never knew there was an option to ‘check’ as in select a ‘hidden’ anamorphic option, that’s a first for me I’ve only ever cut DVpal 720×576 and HDV and never had to modify a clip in the browser before.
First time for everything.
