  • why won’t this go below 2 mb?

Got a problem re: compression for web video – got a 1:30 DV/DVCPRO NTSC sequence, exported QT conversion, Mpeg 4, h264, data rate 150, 176 x 144, 200 keyframe, mono audio, 30 fps.

I have a good 320 x 240 mpeg 4 version which works nice at 4.1 mb, but I need an alternate version at under 2 mb, which is why I made the data rate so low on this one, ie 150. Still I CAN’T get this thing below 3.1 mb.

Strangely, when I open QT 7 PRO and get the info of this file, it says it has a data rate of 276.48 and is 3.3 mb, though definitely I gave it a data rate of 150 when converted.

    Thanks

Don’t forget the audio is added into the final data rate.

Half your frame rate (15fps) and your overall file size will drop.

Thanks for the audio reminder – I did do one conversion at 15 fps and it didn’t get it down below 3.1mb…surely reducing the data rate should get this thing down, but dare I set it below 100?

if that’s what you need, then yes. you can also reduce the audio rate.

Thanks for the replies – if you go to

    https://www.enhancedwireless.net/index.html

and click on the 1.7mb video clip version – you’ll see a 176 x 144 H264 compression that is VERY good (I think). However, I CANNOT seem to get my other 1:30 video down below 3.3mb (not yet on the web site).

So question is, what do you think most people are prepared to put up with re: download size and therefore time? Should I just leave my other video at 3.3mb and call it a day?

you are talking about the difference between 2MB and 3MB. Are people watching this on dial up? To put it in perspective an average iTune is 4MB. Keep at the larger size and be happy. Now if you are talking about the difference between 4 and 40 MBs, then we could do some talking.

You should consider compressing the audio as well, and uncompressed (even mono audio) 1:30 piece will be tough to fit under 2MB – I would go with mp3 compression on the audio, 112kbps mono would be just fine and should get you fairly close to the 2MB size (with reduced bitrate/frame rate mind you).

    Hope that helps!
