  • Why won’t FCP6 play an mp4 file straight from iTunes?

Posted by Beau Brotherton on July 1, 2007 at 10:18 pm

I just downloaded a song from iTunes and it is an mp4 file. When I imported it into FCP6 I had to render it. But it doesn’t have any sound to it. Not sure why.

I’m sure there is an easy fix. If anyone has any ideas please reply. Forward thanks to future responses.

    Best,
    Beau

[beb850] “I just downloaded a song from iTunes and it is an mp4 file.”

That’s why. Digital Rights protection. You cannot purchase a song from iTunes and edit with it in FCP.

You can use a protected song but you have to go through a few steps.
FIrst you create an iTunes playlist with the song or songs. Then burn it to CD,
then reimport it but as a AIFF file, 48k. (see iTunes prefs, advanced).
Then from iTunes, drag it to your media hard drive, then import into FCP.

Of course, assuming you have the proper licenses to edit with it, most importantly being the sync license. You can learn more about this on my podcast about Audio Production. We discussed this very issue in the podcast.

Of course you are correct, but he didn’t ask about rights, so I didn’t talk about it.
If his work is for broadcast or sale of any kind, it’s a show stopper most likely,
unless he has a bottomless checkbook.

There are legitimate production uses for this task other than ripping commercial music, like a music library needledrop that might have been filed on the computer drives via iTunes. Assuming proper licensing, QuickTime Pro will do the conversion. Open the .mp4 in QT Pro and export as an AIFF.

Nope. That does not work with protected songs from iTunes Music Store.
You must jump through the hoops I described to get a clean file.

    Are you able to read?

“…like a music library needledrop that might have been filed on the computer drives via iTunes. Assuming proper licensing…”

My reply had nothing to do with purchased iTunes Store songs. These all involve DRM until recently. If you want to use commercial music, buy the CD and properly license the cut. Period. If you want to use downloaded commercial music then yes you have to jump through hoops.

Why would anyone “file” their library music in an mp4 format? If I’m storing library music on a drive or server, I store it as a 48k aiff.

    Beau,

It looks like your question is answered to an extent.
But, as I was just wrestling with this the other day,
and I found the quickest way was to select the song (in iTunes),
that you want to import, go up into the “Advanced” setting, select
    “Convert Selection to AIFF”…
This duplicates the song as an AIFF.
Drag that converted song to the desktop.
Import it into FCP from the desktop.

    All the best,

    David
