  • Why use Motion if you know After Effects?

Posted by James Culp on November 6, 2010 at 4:53 am

I just got Final Cut Pro, and as I go into the Motion section, I see a lot of similarity’s to After Effects. Would you suggest using After Effects instead of Motion? Or does Motion have something that I am unaware of?

The only advantage of Motion is that you can send things from and back to FC.
And the price, because is included with FCS.

It’s got nice templates if you need to bang stuff out quickly and the particle emitters are cool. I don’t think you can use one or the other. They are both tools in the tool box for different tasks.

I was in your position. I’ve been using AE for years, and when I got FCP tried Motion. I don’t bother with it at all. AE is far more capable than Motion, so I couldn’t see any creative advantage for using it. There was, in my view, no value to go through the learning curve for Motion when everything I’d want to do can be done–usually better–in AE. Also, AE is the industry standard, not Motion.

Thanks you for the feedback, I already own AE and am kinda overwhelmed by the need to learn another program to get my stuff out to the market. The round tripping is an advantage but the trade off is daunting.
It seems kinda like if I had been using inDesign for years and all of the sudden I bought a program with “text edit” in it, as the graphics program. But because I don’t know why people would use Motion I was looking for some advantages and reason here. Thank you again for your reply.

I will check out the templates that is good to know. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of this program.

Wow, exactly what I thought. But being new to FCP, I thought O this has got to have some value and if I overlook what ever that is I will be behind the curve when I get up to speed. But the more I learned about Motion the more I kept findin myself say, I can do that in AE, and That and That. I may be pushing the envelope here when I say this but I am using Sorenson Squeeze instead of Compressor. I find it to be an easier program to work with and the files are very clean. I suppose I could even go with Encore instead of DVD Pro.
I just need to get back to shooting, so I can pick up them awards, $$$, Chicks and a better looking posse´ ;O)

    Motion has a realtime engine.
After effects has a buffer engine.

After effects is a mature and professional program that can do anything.
Motion is more realtime, intuitive, creative, fast, good roundtripping with FCP.

Both are great side by side or stand alone.

If you’re on a deadline, stick with AE because it’s what you know.

But if you have some downtime, dig into Motion and learn it. You’ll find that there are scenarios where Motion can bang out some things much, MUCH quicker than AE. When you get to the point where you’re competent with both AE and Motion, it’ll be obvious when you want to use AE and when to use Motion.

Kind of like the difference between a biscuit joiner and a dowel jig. They both do essentially the same thing, but there are particular circumstances where each is a better choice than the other.

I don’t know what a real time engine is? I have a couple of Mac Pro’s, and I run CS5 so with the new 64bit upgrade, I am now never out of memory which used to be a big challenge.I guess FCP isn’t opened up like CS5 yet. But I haven’t run into the out of memory alert yet.

If you already know AE, Motion is ANYTHING but intuitive. I pick up apps pretty easy and it drives me nuts every time I’m forced to go in there.
